Simon Sim is a true veteran in local fashion magazines having spent 14 years at Mediacorp Publishing. He has shot countless celebrities, both locally and internationally and is known to work the best angles in his shots. Simon was ELLE magazine’s Photographer of the Year in 2007.
What is your story?
I chanced upon photography when I was undergoing my Graphic Design course in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) as a medium for advertisements and designs.
How long have you been doing photography?
I have been shooting for 14 years professionally.
To be a good and qualified photographer, does one need a professional certificate or academic study?
I think that it would be a great referral to be professionally qualified but individual style in photography will be much more noticed.
What is your area of specialization in photography? Will you be open to try other aspects of photography?
I specialize in fashion photography because I love the connection between the subject and me. Product photography is also something that I am currently still exploring.
Is winning awards important?
It would be good to win awards because it gives recognition and may open more windows of opportunities.
What is your aspiration?
I hope to hold my own exhibition one day.
Is there a stigma?
I don’t think so.
Which is more important; skills, talent or the camera?
Personal skill is more important.

Practice by taking lots of pictures to see what you feel most passionate about. Reading more about photography helps too.
