It’s always fascinating how an unexpected old neighborhood becomes a trendy hang-out place for fashionistas. Star Street in Hong Kong is a great example. Star Street used to be a sleepy residential area save for some restaurants and there was hardly any fashion retail until Kapok bravely opened its first retail store in August 2008, and thereafter their second outlet in 2010. The place has now attracted some very cool brands to house their retail shops here including 45rpm, Visvim and Monocle.
St Francis Street, Star Street, Moon Street and Sun Street formed this enclave. You can find many emerging brands in Kapok, Vein and Vie Swedish concept stores, design labels from designers of top fashion schools on Russell Street and the latest WDSG store for arts & crafts. It is very refreshing to spend a quiet weekend at Star Street. You will never run out places to eat considering the good selection of restaurants, organic shops and a yogurt cafe. One of the advantages of Star Street is that it is very convenient and located just next to Pacific Place.
What does it take for a place to become hip and trendy? (I’m talking along the likes of Darlinghurst in Sydney and Bond in Barcelona) One shop definitely can’t do it alone. It requires a good mix of stores, F&B , showrooms and services to make the perfect recipe.
We have seen the evolution of fashion retail in recent years. More concept stores are emerging everywhere in uncommon locations that are away from major and large shopping malls.
Like any business, there is definitely competition. The ‘back lanes’ of Harajuku have become a must visit to hunt for cool fashion items. Now, Tokyo has expanded and created many more interesting shopping districts that are fashion heaven for many, like Daikanyama. Hong Kong is no different.
If you are looking for more high fashion and street labels, On Lan Street houses shops like Christian Louboutin, Neighborhood, Ann Demeulemeester and Comme des Garcons. There is currently some construction that is taking over this street and you will be in a bit of a daze looking for your fashion favourites. Noone ever said shopping was easy. Especially when it requires some research, knowledge and persistence.
